yeah its a shame this happens but its part of the process. For example that beat up silver Z we saw making the rounds im sure will be crushed ect... but some preproduction ( not protoypes) cars make it into owners hands at least I know of a few cases with the GTR.

here is an interesting anecdote. so I was involved with the initial launch of the GTR NISMO in the US in 2014 and my car was the first production NISMO sold outside of Japan. NIssan held the other cars at port in the US for about 2-3 weeks until they starting hitting dealers for other owners. They even sent a videographer to Japan to film the step by step assembly of my car on the line. flash forward a year or so and we find a couple of the prepoductions NISMOs had made it to auction that were media cars and lent out to motortrend car and driver ect . so these cars wernt destroyed but yet they arnt production cars but have VIN# below the first true production car.

we had a guy on GTRLIFE looking into buying one and we matched the VIN# to the motortrend article were randy pobst did the Laguna Seca lap in it for best drivers car competition that year. and it was the same white NISMO that every magazine drove. so this poor NISMO had like 15K miles on it or something and probably the majority of the miles were journalists or track miles beating on it and the buyer would have never known unless we discovered it and told him not to buy it. I havent checked on that car in a while but I think it eventually was wrecked with a salvage title. but somehow it did end up at auction and then to a dealer in FL

there are a few other examples of the GTR NISMOs Nissan had on display at autoshows ( the Matte Gray ones) also went to auction and then the used car dealers.

I think there is a difference between how a true prototype and a preproduction car might be treated? so would be interesting to see if there are any reports of this happening with Zs that start making the rounds to car reviewers ect this spring

I'm surprised that Nissan hasn't let anyone from the media behind the wheel of a new Z yet. Meanwhile Toyota held a drive event for the A90 Supra while the cars were still covered in camo.

It happens without warning to the general public (not that they need too), right after the cars are done serving the purpose they were intended for. As production of customer-ordered vehicles kick off, most of these get crushed. The only people in the know, would be anyone connected to the automaker.
