Big automakers typically have hundreds of prototypes produced for global testing, so 77 for just one region is about right. My guess is that Nissan has at most a couple hundred of these running around globally.

That makes sense. I guess I'm just thinking of the GTR world where there were just a handful of preproduction cars running around before hand. There was a great VIN registry could could track every year. But yeah a higher production car it makes sense there are already more

Just a noob question, do they sell the testing carr? If so, do these cost less?

my only experience of this is from the GTR world and with that they didnt sell true prototypes however preproduction cars they are for all intents and purposes identical to production cars like the ones from media drive days or even a car show circuit ect sometimes did wind up for sale but they are almost always sold through wholesale auctions and then resold by a dealer like any used car. again the examples with the GTR I observed went for typical auction prices based on miles ect. Im guessing there was no distinction made and the buyers didnt even know.

no idea if any Zs will see the same fate once they start getting in the hands of journalists ect but it does happen as ive seen a few cases of these cars ending up in private owners hands months later.

in the case of the GTR I was talking about absolutely yes. there was a white NISMO GTR that a guy on GTRLIFE was interested in at a FL dealership. he simply asked if anyone knew about the car. I went and did some research for him and ended up matching the VIN # to the exact car that motor trend did a review of and was used for the laguna seca lap. so this car probably spent most of its life on tracks or beaten. the member of my site didnt end up buying the car and im not sure what happened to it. If he wouldnt have posted on the site and I didnt happen to find a pic of the door panel on motor trends website where I zoomed in and matched the VIN he would have never known

there was a less drastic example of this where a guy on GTRLIFE was asking about a matte gray NISMO. that color was really rare and eventually discontinued but we were able to use a GTR registry online and track that VIN back to a car that nissan used at various autoshows months before the car was available for sale. it eventually ended up at auction then resold.

so there are a few cases I know that this happened with that particular model GTR. the autoshow car isnt a big deal but the one that had been used for all the car magazine reviews I would have been mad if I paid $150K+ and didnt know.

Such an act comes under fraud and cheating. If someone happens to experience this, they must knock the doors of the court and get a huge amount as compensation by the dealers.

as for the motor trend car. if the brakes and tires were replaced by nissan and it got a full fluid swap ect before auction then its probably not much worse off than any other used one. its just the fact that the owner bought without knowing. after I posted this I was curious what happened to it and found a website that shows 5 records of sale for it.

as it relates to the Z we will probably start a VIN registry later this year when owners start to get their cars. once that gets populated it will be easy to see if there are any really early outlier VINs that pop up for sale down the road

That would be great! It would reduce the chances of committing such mischievous acts by the dealers.
