I love 300zx inspired tails as much as everyone else here but this could also work.

Yeah. My first impression was this is a BMW rear. I'm good with the way the rear is now.

There's a lot of empty space in that new design. The lights would have to be much bigger for me if the back isn't going to be black.

That is something I could get over. A bar connecting the lower portion could help.
