Did I read that right, 5200 RPM redline?

Doesn't even cross 5252 RPMs where the horsepower and torque curves cross mathematically? That seems pretty low.

Car & Driver spec sheet says 400hp peak figure comes in at 6400 RPMs... so redline seems like 7200 is more likely than 5200 revs.

With all the talk about how the new Nissan Z will essentially be a slightly reworked and restyled 370Z with the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport's engine, I figure it was worth starting a thread for reviews of that car... specially for the engine comments.

While not an owner, I’ve heard enough Redsport exhausts (both in videos and live) to comment. I have a G37S Coupe 6MT. I and other G35/37 as well as 350/370Z owners love the sounds our naturally aspirated (NA) engines make - especially when enhanced by aftermarket exhausts (mine is an HKS Highpower catback). Everyone will love the Redsport’s power, and I’m sure it’ll sound great in the new Z, but we of the NA persuasion will find its note lacking, a price most of us will begrudgingly accept. I’m willing to “make the sacrifice” and sell the G to get into a new Z, but I’ll wait until the inevitable Nismo drops.

Agreed that naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engines can make very good sounds (although sometimes NOT).

I am a big fan of Porsche and Subaru flat-6 engines, despite Subaru's abandonment of them. Probably the sweetest engine note I can remember is a Stebro exhaust on a Subaru EG33 SVX... it sounds like a slightly smaller chorus version of a V12.

However, modern turbo cars, especially fast-spool, modest pressure, direct-injected turbo engines that respond more like an atmospheric engine of a larger displacement... the exhaust can be tuned to sound pretty good, and not strangled by a large turbine ratio, and a heavy wastegate for huge boost levels... Turbos are a pressure differential device, not a flow rate device, and bigger turbos depend on a bigger pressure differential in the turbine housing to capture the energy of pressure trying to equalize.

Maybe it is the physics of velocity of exhaust gasses, rather than volume of exhaust gasses that allows for the sound. Organ pipes and other woodwind instruments trade off between volume and velocity as well.

I realize that the price is orders of magnitude higher, but McLaren, Ferrari Roma, and other high-rev, moderate boost, twin-turbocharged V8s (2 smaller units, rather than one or two larger ones) are tuned to sound very good. The potential is there...
