Same here in Australia. No idea why US allows it.
that and why you cant buy from the manufacturer directly are a product of non uniform laws because of our state system. its really complicated but franchise laws varied from state to state for the most part for decades in the US and they enforced the fact that dealerships are not just extensions of the manufacturer they are independently owned business that instead have a relationship with the manufacturer. long story but these laws were developed in part to protect the dealer from being undercut in price from the car companies selling the cars direct to customer. most of these laws dont even exist any more but the status quo system that came out of it is still in place .....except for Tesla
basically once the car is wholesale bought from the manufacturer they can do with it what they please. as you are buying the dealers car not the manufacturers car anymore. manufacturers dont usually step in unless sometimes when insane markups go viral with bad company PR like the Bronco or C8 Z06 or the Electric ford lightning truck . manufacturers usually put out a statement and vow to curb the practices by taking away allocations from those dealers. since what they can do is fairly limited most of the time its just posturing and only gets rectified on a case by case basis at best when it comes to the worst offenders.
the dealers take on this is you dont complain when they have to deeply discount under MSRP to move it from the lot. so dont complain when they take advantage of when demand is up. I dont agree with this as fair intended profit is already built in at MSRP and the even more complicated system of incentives and reimbursements they sometimes receive when selling at a discount not to mention volume in general.
so there isnt a real solution to it other being on the right side of supply and demand. a hot new sports car by definition is usually on the wrong side so customers get caught in this over and over
its a shame because I enjoy the ordering process and getting updates about the car being built and shipped almost as much as ownership. If you feel like these cars will be held hostage to the highest bidder its hard to enjoy that process with them. ive been on both sides of it. ive had a certain dealership go way beyond to help me to the point no other dealer on earth would have done and ive had another dealer just last year pretend to be my friend then pretty much metaphorically spit in my face all because for a few extra $$
