This Toyota patent filed back in 2020 shows a carbon fiber monocoque similar to what some exotic car companies already produce. It also shows how a mid-mounted electrified powertrain and battery could be mounted to it.

I don't know about you guys but this is starting to seem like plans for a next-gen MR2, especially after Toyota revealed an all-electric MR2-esque concept last last year.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit or prevent an increase in the weight and degradation of rigidity of a vehicle having a monocoque body made of a reinforcement material reinforced resin from occurring at a time of mounting an engine in the vehicle.

SOLUTION: A monocoque body 10 and a sub frame 30 are integrally molded and made of a reinforcement material reinforced resin. The sub frame 30 includes a bottom 32 and a standing part 34. The bottom 32 is fixed to a lower part of a rear wall 20 of the monocoque body 10, and extended backward in a vehicle. The standing part 34 is extending upward from the bottom 32. An engine 70 is directly attached to the rear surface of the standing part 34.
