What sick sounds this car made. I had two 280ZX’s during my college days (both used) each w/aftermarket exhausts (ANSA) that made sweet sounds, but nothing like this heavily modified monster of a car. It’s a shame there’s no major Japanese player making an in-line six for the US. I thought Toyota would do it with the MKV Supra but they sadly crapped out and didn’t bother making much of anything for the Supra save for its heinous skin and suspension mods. I’m sure there’s more to it than that but I don’t care - it’s not a Supra if Toyota didn’t make the power train. Having said all that, kudos to Nissan for keeping it real and making the engine themselves AND offering a manual transmission. I’m a buyer of the Nismo version (with a stick) in a couple of years.
You know, the turbo sounded great, as did the wastegate, but the upcoming Z unfortunately won’t sound nearly as good. Just listen to YouTube vids on the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport which has the 400hp 3.0 TT engine. The turbo muffles the exhaust sound with a slight vacuum cleaner-like noise. The mandatory Q60 automatic transmission probably does its part to make the sound less appealing but with any luck, MT versions will sound better and perhaps Nissan will offer a slightly different/tuned exhaust. Fingers crossed 🤞. It makes me appreciate the exhaust sound of my NA G37S coupe 6MT - and those of all current and former G’s and 350/370Z’s.
Someone will definitely make an exhaust system that brings out the Z's sound if it does sound subdued.
There’s no question the aftermarket will go bananas with the new Z. I just wish I didn’t HAVE to spend an additional $1500+ to get what I want when Nissan already knows a great sound is essential to a great sports car. I went with the HKS Hi-Power for my G37 coupe and I LOVE it. I’m so happy with my car now that it’s gonna take a 400Z Nismo to get me out of it.
