Im very familiar with out it works in the GTR world. I tested it for years and years on each model year and I can tell you stories all about the different versions that Nissan put out throughout the years all the way back to the bad PR of the 2009 to the legit version starting in 2012 and how companies like Ecutek ( Cobb at the time too) put out tunes that would mimic the OEM version in cars that didnt have that same version like a retrofit. this is primarily where these aftermarket LC were the most useful they would take the OEM ROM maybe tweak it a bit ( or not) and make it available for like a 2009-2011 GTR that didnt have the best version that started in 2012. For high horsepower builds they would make launch control work by making it work with VDC off. Nissan made LC not work from the factory with VDC off and it would come on with very little wheel spin to protect the car.

but im not as familiar how it works on cars that didnt have it to begin with like the Z. I assume it works similar in theory as they just program it to hold RPM while braking but it seems to be a tune made from scratch rather than what they did for the GTR where they took Nissans actual program and copied the parameters. I wouldnt be interested in it for my personal Z.

Factory launch control confirmed for both the 6MT and 9AT. to me at least I was a little surprised. I said in the intial post I wasnt really interested in an aftermarket solution but I guess I never even considered the Z would have it as an OEM feature. If it works well it could be really awesome .

now that we know its an out of the box I'm curious to see how Nissans launch control feature works... I've got well over a hundred launches over the years with dual clutch but never really tried the feature on anything else

Im hoping the 9AT will just be brake to the floor and go. Curious how conservative they are with RPM

I haven't launched a manual car with launch control but BMW M has some videos out about how their launch control works with a manual.

I'm going to randomly guess like 3300-3500 for a solid but safe launch from a factory feature. I've never driven a Q60 with that engine so not sure what's optimal. I doubt it would be any higher than that but If you get under 2500 there isnt a real point to it.

The one thing that is difficult with the GTR and we will see if the Z has this but its after a few seconds with LC engaged RPMs will drop back to idle. so if you are at a drag tree you cant really engage it until you see the first yellow and you also need to be the last car to trigger the tree. ive had it drop back to idle on me before waiting for the lights to fall. thats really the only scenario where that would mess you up. also I wonder if for the Z you launch with traction control off? in the GTR you have to launch with it on and it can be a real nanny and cut power if it detects too much spin.

Yeah it seems straight forward. I'd have to think that Nissan's is going to use a similar process to launch it.

I don't understand the need for launch control on a manual. You can rev it where you want and feather the clutch. It makes sense for the auto.

I think it's more of controlling wheel spin than anything with the manual cars. Especially for those who aren't as familiar with launching manual cars.

I noticed that! Looked like a launch control takeoff to me, as well. If so, it seems like it sets up pretty quickly.

this was an auto so im assuming once you put the Z in D mode Sport( a button by the shifter) then just brake to the floor and then a jab of the gas to the floor. seems to be a simple procedure as fast as he did it

Just looked like normal brake-boosting to me. How is what's in the video any different?

My GTI DSG had launch control, it was much different than what I saw in that Z video. Held high revs in neutral, then feathered in the clutches as you released the brakes. Launched fairly violently for a 4 popper

that gunmetal car tamura was driving was an automatic and launch control is a known feature on the car which is just gonna be brake to the floor then gas to the floor and lift brake just like a GTR. you can see it actually hold for a split second and the rear squats. the silver Z with the beat up fender was also an auto and did it on video and it was just like that. you can see the rear squat the same way. it was definitely how the 9AT does LC.

LC on an automatic is more or less the same brake boosting technique except the brakes arnt physically holding the car back in the sense its wanting to move forward the entire time. when the brake is fully depressed the car realizes what you are doing and transmission holds the car so you dont get that bog down feeling like traditional old school brake boost. im guessing LC is simply activated in D mode sport then with the quick brake and gas pedal process. both drivers activated it very fast.




14 sec mark the revs build and car squats. too early to tell exact #'s but looks like the LC on the Z is rather mild RPMS. im guessing based on this vid a little over 3K?? the GTR is 4100 sounds less than that to me

Didn't look any different than any other turbo car with a torque converter auto.
