What surprised me was how close the dimensions were. I would've sworn that the Z was going to be much bigger than the Supra before looking at the numbers.

Very surprising! Particularly given that virtually everyone's (mine included) first impression of the the MkV is just how compact it is. I was reading some reactions from ZCON and it seems like the new Z has that same impact.

Here's hoping Nissan maximizes the interior space because the Supras can be pretty cramped depending on how tall/big you are.

Oh, I expect the interior dimensions to be identical to my 370. That should be unchanged.

Evo Magazine is estimating that the Z is going to have a better power to weight ratio than the Supra. It'll be interesting to see because the Germans tend to tell little white lies when it comes to performance numbers.

True, though they are basing it upon the 335 HP configuration which, while still in effect in Europe, is no longer offered in the US. We get the 382 HP flavor so the calculation would be much closer.

Dyno testing has verified that the Supra HP ratings are vastly closer to actual wheel HP than typical crank HP that manufacturers quote, and I understand that the VR30 has similar qualities, so we shall see how that shakes out when people get their hands on the cars.

BMW seems to outperform other cars with similar horsepower, but the Nissan looks so much better IMO and has a manual, so I don’t care if the z is a half second slower to 60mph if it has good driving dynamics.

Welcome to the forum @Ryanne! Yeah I think a lot of people feel the same as you and even if the Z's slower there'll be plenty of aftermarket support to make that happen.

Have you though about how you'd spec your Z?

If they keep the performance trim south of 50k, I would opt for the performance trim. I like the creature comforts and was surprised the sport likely won’t have an LSD. Of the colors I’ve seen I’d get the blue I have a black golf r now and everything is black. I need some color!

Yeah the pricing is really going to be interesting between the Sport and Performance. You really can't go wrong with that blue. Are you looking to keep your Golf R along with the Z?

I’ll trade in the golf r, resale values should still be pretty strong in the spring. I’ve got an old suv I can use on sever winter days. However, I will get winter tires for the z so I I’ll drive it year round.

This, and I will be tuning and adding other mods immediately. Current Supra's cannot be tuned.

But will it have as good or better driving dynamics than Supra? I'm not so sure about that. I'm very worried about weight too, which makes you very sus because Nissan gave a lot of info, except two things, performance price, and weight. I bet they will be downfalls.

Sadly, but as expected, the Z didn’t fare well (either stick or automatic) against the MKV (or the Mustang) in drag races and timed sprints to 60 and the quarter mile, IF you put a lot of stock in the numbers. I don’t, so the tenths lost to the Supra mean nothing to me. Part of the problem is that Nissan was penny wise and pound foolish in equipping the Performance model with Bridgestones instead of superior Michelins or Pirellis that would’ve cost only a few hundred dollars more. Nevertheless, reviewers stated the Z drives beautifully and the improved manual transmission is a huge upgrade from the 370Z/G37 from whence it came. The Z’s automatic didn’t receive high praise but it wasn’t considered a bad transmission. We knew the Z wouldn’t be a lightweight because of the legacy chassis and relatively low price. We also knew that a manual Z wouldn’t beat a faster-shifting MKV automatic or the Z’s own automatic for that matter. That the Z is said to drive so well and apparently can be driven with the windows open (the MKV cannot due to unbearable buffeting) means the Z is a winner. Looking forward to possibly buying a Nismo, or perhaps a future trim level that adds the LSD and upgraded brakes to a Sport. If neither comes to pass, I’d go for the Performance.

First, thanks for posting this, Rusty. The reviewer said Toyota claimed it was customer demand that spawned the manual transmission. Bullshit. There aren’t more now wanting the manual than when it came out. The only demand which spurred the Supra getting a stick was the obvious demand for the stick in the Z - nothing more, nothing less. I hate it when automakers obscure the truth. Toyota has done this all along with the twins too, claiming they wouldn’t get an optional turbo engine (from the WRX) because of “weight”, “higher center of gravity”and “price” - just more BS. The twins didn’t get a turbo to prevent them from embarrassing a base Supra for thousands less while being better looking, more reliable, cheaper to maintain and repair, and substantively closing the performance gap between it and the six-cyl Supra - nothing more, nothing less. Now back to the Supra…

In profile, in the matte white pearl of the manual car in the video seemed to hide some of the extraneous lumps, bumps and awkward lines. That said, after brief shots of front and rear and seeing the double bubble roof from other angles, I was quickly reminded of why I call this car, “fugly”, whenever describing its looks. That said, the impending manual MKV eliminates one of the three glaring MKV faults: auto-only, it’s a BMW instead of a Toyota, and lastly, poor styling. I don’t think the stick Supra will steal much from the Z because the Z is not just better looking, but it’s a fully-Japanese car (and all that entails) while being anything from a little cheaper to a LOT cheaper than the Supra depending upon trim level. I certainly hope Nissan owns up to its mistake in offering Bridgestones instead of Michelins or Pirellis on the Performance model and makes the switch at some point in the not-too-distant future. That, and of course adding a mid-level trim adding the LSD and brakes to the Sport trim. Time will tell.
