There are few things as car enthusiasts that are better than a great shifting car on a track or open road. On the flip side nothing gets you taken out of the moment of driving like a bad shifting car.

So for everyone that has driven their fair share of manual transmissions what the best and worst cars you've driven? Is there a Z that makes the cut or is it another car?

I got to drive a friend's 2016 MX-5 and that things has a fantastic gearbox to me. It shifts so effortlessly and you can have so much fun with it. As for worst I test drove a Forester, 2013 or 2014, I can't remember, and there was no feedback whatsoever with the clutch or throttle. I expected so much more from Subaru.

I had a 4-speed manual Tercel that was interesting, it wasn't bad but the worst of all manuals I owned.

Miata is a good answer. Very compliant shifter. Not TOO precise, but very natural feeling.

I think the S2000 has to be the best I've driven. Extremely precise and short.

As for the worst shifters, I got a knock-off B&M for an old Integra and it was just brutal. I do not recommend. I had a real B&M before on an old Civic and loved it.

But the worst factory one was probably the Genesis coupe. That 3-2 downshift just never wants to happen. It's like you get locked out of 2nd all the time. So odd

It's funny how quickly the Genesis coupe became a first time tuner car for people. I've seen more modified ones than stock ones in my area.

I think it was just a great combo of low price and lots of power. The V6 model didn't sell well, but the 2.0T was cheap and easy to add HP to it... so a great combo all around.
Plus, it was RWD so a lot of fun.

A real shame Hyundai killed it. The new Genesis brand is too fancy to be affordable for most folks.

In 2000 I bought the original tiny Mercedes’ A class, it came with a manual transmission but no clutch pedal, the clutch was applied automatically by the car, so it was fun, comfortable and sporty.

Stinger is cool, but just a bit too big for me. Probably crazy cheap once they are a few years old though.
