I like this idea and think it would be interesting to see different layouts. Not sure how hard it would be though since I suck with electronics.
Super easy in that there's no need to mess with circuits or wiring.

What's difficult is decoding the cluster programming and installing new graphics into it's memory. Would be best for Nissan to do us a solid and offer some heritage themes from every generation of Z. Would be super simple on their end, or a labor of love for someone who could hack the cluster software.

I agree that it would be incredibly easy for Nissan to do themselves (hell, I'd pay extra for it). It may even be easy for the aftermarket to do as well, unless Nissan has the firmware on the screens locked down - which is totally unknown as this point. If that is the case, a new aftermarket screen would be necessary. To that point, I hope the screen is easily removable. What I'm getting is that an aftermarket display with an analog center tac, with digital side screens would be awesome too!

A company is making full-lcd clusters for the Nissan Armada: CaRobotor Y Pro digital dash ( Nissan Patrol Y 62 dash )

I reckon it's only a matter of before the Z gets support, the good thing about these new clusters is that, on Nissan so far, they are all the same base display, all reading the same format of data, so making a custom cluster could have the cost spread amongst multiple models.

Good to know it would be easy after someone decodes the programming. Would be nice to change the layouts, displayed gauges and their placement, and/or the color theme of the gauges.

Changing themes would be nice, but I'd rather first have the 'smaller' gauges to be configurable. For example, switchable Boost and AFR, Water and Exhaust Temps, etc. Central tach is fine since manual is my preference anyway.

It'll be interesting to see how much configurability Nissan allows. As it is in this pic, the boost gauge is redundant to the one on the dash.

I think it will be a closed box with warranty voiding if you hacked it. Its a cool project to undertake having watched a video or two where someone programmed one themselves.

I never paid great attention at college but its a nice skill to have to be able to reprogram custom gauges or design something similar to the zx digital gauge.

The aftermarket however may be able to offer up something in conjunction with Nissan. Nissan may take issue with it. Depends

I think this is an interesting idea for the suggestion box. Z31 look dash as an option or via aftermarket. @DAN_PASSE

The fact it's all digital should give Nissan even more of a reason to do something custom and cool like this. As for things that would happen (different colors, font, layout, etc. for different driving modes) what would everyone here like to see?

Red would be the go to for Sport. I think Normal should be white, Economy if it exists a dull White or hint of Green. Id like an option for Blue with Sport mode. Customizable. Again im thinking it may be downloadable later on.
